ORGAN APPEAL

FUNDS RAISED to DATE:   (18 June 2007)         $250,023

OUR IMMEDIATE GOAL:                               $377,400

CASAVANT OP 665 is a prime example of the work of that great builder in one of its greatest periods.  Formerly in the cavernous basement chapel of the Basilica of SS Peter and Paul in Lewiston, Maine, the instrument is now in storage awaiting the beginning of restoration and rebuilding.

Remarkably, and greatly to the credit of SS Peter and Paul organists, the organ seems to have been installed, tuned, cleaned, and otherwise left alone – providing us with a ‘time machine’ instrument.  The organ blowers and console, at the time of their removal, were still working on direct current, (!) which had been disconnected.

We are now in the process of fund-raising for the exciting renovation/rebuilding project, which will see this organ revisiting its former glory in the Resurrection, its new home.  Resurrection’s extensive Anglo-Catholic music programme demands an organ equal to its rigours, and Casavant Op. 665 is a perfect match for that challenge in scope, quality, and variety of sound.

Every gift, whether it be great or small, is most helpful, and can be sent to

The Organ Fund,

Church of the Resurrection,

119 East 74th Street,

New York, New York  10021.

Memorials are available in several categories.

The organ consists of thirty-six ranks of pipes, all the original enclosures and of course, the gorgeous mahogany-inlaid console, with its hand carved ivory appointments, which are all to be retained.  Several stops may be added to the existing equipment, in the spirit of enrichment rather than fulfillment.

When its installation is complete, this organ will provide Resurrection with a real treasure, an organ well worthy of its surroundings, and the City with another jewel in its crown of organs.
